Each being is a butterfly in their own garden — and Kanavu was one such dream garden.
Nestled in the green hills of Wayanad, Kanavu — meaning “dream” the tribal tongue of Malayalam — was not just a school. It was a living, breathing space where children learned through art, song, nature, and freedom.
Founded in 1992 by renowned writer, activist, and filmmaker K. J. Baby and Prof. Sherly Baby, Kanavu became one of India’s earliest and most influential alternative learning movements.
It offered a new way of schooling for Wayanad’s tribal children — one rooted in freedom, identity, and culture.
Kanavu was more than an experiment — it was a revolution in education.
It showed that learning is most powerful when it grows from local wisdom, language, and community.
Kanavu challenged the belief that education must disconnect children from their land and culture.
Instead, it proved the opposite:
✅ Learning can grow from local wisdom and nature
✅ Art, language, and culture are central — not optional
✅ Children thrive when they are respected and heard
✅ Education flourishes when it is community-led
The dream began with a question:
Why did so many tribal children leave school?
Among them was Mini, a young girl from the Paniya community, who left school after facing constant discrimination and alienation. For her and many others, the classroom had become a place of fear, not belonging.
Kanavu emerged as an answer — a space where learning could be joyful, rooted in culture, and free from fear.
At Kanavu, education grew from the soil of experience.
Children learned through music, storytelling, crafts, farming, and the rhythm of daily life.
Lessons unfolded under trees, in paddy fields, and by the fire at night.
Kalari (martial arts), indigenous songs, folk tales, and nature walks replaced rote memorization.
Knowledge came from elders, artists, travelers, and every visitor who passed through — everyone was a teacher, and every day was a lesson.
Kanavu’s children lived as a family — growing their own food, sharing work, and nurturing a spirit of self-reliance.
Education here was not just about learning — it was about becoming whole human beings, confident in their roots and connected to their land.
Through music, dance, storytelling, and collective living,
Kanavu showed that education is life itself — not a separate institution.
It became Wayanad’s most meaningful and proven educational model —
a place where children who once dropped out of mainstream schools rediscovered learning with joy, dignity, and belonging.
Kanavu inspired educators across India and beyond, planting the seed for a more creative, inclusive, and compassionate form of education.
ARTONE: Reviving the Dream
Though Kanavu faced challenges and closed in 2016 due to financial constraints, its spirit continues to live on through those it touched.
Former students like Chipran, Leela, Mini, and Sudhi, along with many friends of Kanavu, continue to keep its flame alive — reviving traditional arts, Kalari, and herbal medicine — keeping the dream alive for the next generation.
At ARTONE, we carry this dream forward — blending Kanavu’s soul with a modern, inclusive approach to creative education.
Like Kanavu, we believe learning should grow from culture, community, and creativity — where every child can dream freely, learn deeply, and live meaningfully.
Through ARTONE, we are reviving and reimagining the way of education —
a new path where art leads learning, and every learner finds their wings.

K.J. Baby’s 'Kanavu — The Dream' That Inspired Us
At ARTONE School of Art & Animation, we carry forward the spirit of KANAVU.
We are reimagining Mr. K. J. Baby’s dream—now with government affiliation and KGCE certification—to make creative, inclusive education accessible to all.
In today’s fast-moving world, slowing down to learn through experience, creativity, patience, and nature is a challenge—but it’s one we proudly embrace.
Our focus is on empowering tribal and rural students, giving them the freedom to express, create, and grow through art.
Upon completion, students receive a Kerala Government Certificate Examination (KGCE) certification—opening pathways to earn, sustain, and contribute as artists, educators, and community change-makers.
At ARTONE, Kanavu lives on—
a dream rekindled, where learning is life, and every child finds their voice through art.
